Gallery Text A daily commute in New York City, like many major cities, involves a stroll past immense modernist skyscrapers: three-story tall lobbies, polished marble floors and black leather furniture with chrome detail. The iconic architectural spaces house the city’s largest corporations and each night, these brightly lit, cavernous displays of global private wealth become the backdrop for their own upkeep. Soap-covered windows, the familiar whirr of a floor buffer and the rhythmic motion of a vacuum going back and forth - The repetitive acts in service of repelling the surrounding detritus tarnishing this pristine architectural image. In Clean Lines, this detritus is collected and embedded into the icon of the modernist skyscraper: the shiny glass facades are infiltrated with weeds, pen caps, and pigeon feathers; the Lever House floor plans are printed in dust; the lobby corners are damp and the air ducts produce an inexplicable yet mesmerizing secretion. The Lever House is a skyscraper located in Midtown Manhattan; it was designed by SOM for Unilever. The design brief was for the structure to be a living advertisement for the soap conglomerate. In response, SOM made “cleaning” a part of the building structure by embedding tracks for a permanent window washing gondola located on the roof. The pristine facade became synonymous with being maintained: physical maintenance as well as status maintenance. Clean Lines presents a modernist architecture that is unmaintainable, a metaphor of public defiance towards these inaccessible spaces of corporate wealth. Photography by Amber N. Curated by Pia Singh In the course of the last three years, the pandemic has changed the way we seek and perceive intimacy. As isolation, loneliness, and grief taint the day-to-day, most individual interactions have grown more sensitized, intentional, and purposeful with people consciously seeking out connections based on shared lived experiences, renewed perspectives, and even shared psycho/social/spiritual beliefs in order to help quell collective anxieties. With the old ways being ‘lost,’ a lot has been found in our capacities to adapt, bringing us to a moment of reflection in the form of an exhibition at ADDS DONNA this December. In ‘Lost Intimacies’ each artist forms a thread, tying to a theme that touches on different pressure points of how acutely our relationship to one another, and time and space, has changed. Zakkiyyah Najeebah’s latest photographic series captures intimate portraits of queer identity in relation to literal and metaphoric spaces of interiority, beholding spaces of communal synergy and radical care for both one self and the other. Jaclyn Mednicov’s paintings and wallpapers allude to the temporality of nature, positioning us in simultaneity with cosmic time. In the reliefs of florals encountered in her backyard, she questions what potential lies in the patterns of the prairie, moving off the canvas and onto physical walls of the home itself, defying the art - architecture divide that corrupts the mythology of the art market. Shir Ende’s practice invites the viewer into the act of transcendental world-building, reimagining architecture as something forming/unforming constantly based on the sensory limitations and abilities of the human body. In screen printed architectural plans, one encounters a ceiling with no floor, a corridor with no walls, and other pseudo-architectural structures that question how we liaise with our environment beyond the tactile and visual. Chloe Munkenbeck’s soft sculptures form an intimate memorial to female pleasure, all the while speaking directly to the impotence of male-dominated systems that penetrate our corporeal experience. This partly summoned jouissance is swiftly set aflame by Mel Cook’s paintings that move us to the heart of a pyre upon which lie the bodies of millions of people whose right to legal abortion have been snuffed out overnight. With higher poverty rates and exacerbated racial disparities, decreased access to care- specifically for women of color- creates a dangerous environment for citizens of this country. How much longer can one remain silent? How complicit does this make us in our own extinction? But as is the case with all things - with all that is lost, there is something to be found. As Cook’s fires scorch and singe, they also rejuvenate the earth for new seeds to be sown. Erin Hayden considers intimacy amongst plants, studying their medicinal and restorative powers in their natural environment. Returning to the immediacy of en plein air watercolor, she attempts to capture their spirit through abstract botanical visualizations, attesting to the abundance of uninterrupted planetary resources. Hayden's palimpsests are antithesis to the ills of big-pharma, pointing audiences to the virtues of spirituality in nature once again. J.Michael Ford’s bent metal sculptures offer us a not-entirely-unrelated view. Articulating free-standing, tubular symphonies that tide against the conventions of our time, these rhythmic sculptures declare the fluidity of the body and the mind, as each of us continues to search for forms of inspiration and vitality in our daily practices. Between creative impulse and fluid orientation, Ford’s sculptures extend meaning beyond their physical tendency, inviting the viewer to negotiate each arrangement from several viewpoints before being deemed one ‘thing’ or another. The work focuses on the orators at Speaker’s Corner, a public space in London designated for enacting one’s freedom of speech. The act of speech is put through a process of abstraction and translation, bringing to the fore crucial, ancillary factors such as gender performativity, public/private contexts and authoritative relationships. An abstracted score is developed outlining the spatial, legal and performative components of Speaker’s Corner. In the performance, the score is co-opted and the confident movements of the speakers are appropriated to conduct an all-female improvised music ensemble. Bookended with intimate rehearsal footage, the process is chaotic and ultimately futile, as the protagonist plays out an abstracted fantasy of authoritative performance. Gallery Text Boudoir noun /büːd.wa/ &nbsp; “The boudoir first appeared in the early 1700’s as a term that referred to a distinctly female space. It had no specific program, but accommodated a variety of activities - reading, resting, bathing, dressing, intimate conversation, and, later during the libertine era, a place for clandestine meeting and sexual seduction.” Troutman, Anne, “The Modernist boudoir and the erotics of space” in Negotiating Domesticity While the excess of a space exclusively dedicated to reflection, intellectual advancement, bathing and sexual fantasy is uncommon in modern architecture - I would certainly welcome its revival - the locked bathroom space supplants itself as today’s boudoir. The most private of private space, its secluded spatial condition invites curious exploration, a close self examination of flattering/unflattering angles and a space of solitary relief. Interior Motives uses the hidden plumbing and objects of the domestic bathroom, to reveal the unfulfilled, restrained and hidden desires examined within. The pipe infrastructure is ever present yet largely invisible but for its orifices: the drain of a sink, the slow drip of a faucet, the spray of a shower head. The cold, tiled surroundings of the bathroom acts as a most trusted witness, containing these intimate acts in its walls and flushing them away, never to be seen again. In a single architectural structure, all plumbing culminates to a single point of exit. Our most intimate, solitary acts, both the sensual and grotesque, mix and combine together with those of our neighbors before being released into the expansive public infrastructure. As the lowermost unit, Roman Susan is the first and last node for 1224 W Loyola Ave’s intimate secretions, the neighbours’ remnants running through the gallery space. Interior Motives intercepts this flow,&nbsp; exposing the surrounding innermost thoughts before they are ejected into the public realm. Gallery Text by Nicky Ni The many forms of silicone—liquid, gel, or rubber—find themselves as window sealant, skin products, and dry-cleaning solvent. They are interconnector between inside and outside, the interlocutor between oil and water. This text unfolds in cycles: delicate, color, permanent press. Each cycle alludes to a set of gestures, bodily movements, movements that wear off the body, movements that occupy the negative space, unchoreographed by nature and time. We begin with cleaning. Back when I was attending primary school in China, we all had to participate in cleaning the classroom. The ones in charge of cleaning the windows would climb to a desk to stand on the window sill, boys exterior, girls interior. We had safety iron window guards to latch onto, and each other. There was no Windex, not even vinegar or alcohol. It was just soap, water, and a lot of newspaper. To get rid of the streaks, we breathed on the window and wiped with newspaper. The windows had our secrets. The only partition between us was the glass. Repetition was intimate. Repeat filling, dipping, wiping, scrubbing, scraping Lever House, the sleek, post-war modernist architecture icon was designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrills (SOM) in 1952 as the Manhattan headquarters for the soap monolith, Lever Brothers Company. When smoothness and ultra-clean were more than just metaphors, maintenance was part of the forethought. It was a building with a built-in window-washing rig, and the first one to have a large-scale facade designed to accommodate a motorized gondola. The window washers would be a thin glass apart from the desk workers; together they have become part of the capitalist masterpiece. Repeat soiling, spinning, dissolving, drying, evaporating According to a 2015 study, Koreans are 34 times more concentrated in the independent dry cleaning business than other immigrant groups in the US. Skills and advice are passed around the community outside of work, in family or religious gatherings. Ethnic expertise is a result of social isolation. Repeat washing, cutting, buzzing, shaving, sweeping Dust always finds its way back home. They are not composed of human skin but mostly dirt, soot, pollen, from the outside, mixed with fluff—from carpet and clothes—and hair. How funny that hair is to us. It’s sensual or it’s disgusting; it depends on where and how we find it. A lock of hair in a love letter, a strand of hair on a hotel pillow, hair in the armpit, hair right above the upper lip, hair shaved and plugged, hairball in the shower drain.
